Just as the mayor is working out a way to take over the Brooklyn Bridge Park project, the construction of the first permanent section of open space in the long-stalled state-run development are underway, park planners said last week.

The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy, whose executive director quit two weeks ago amid cost-overruns and delays, released these photos of workers shaping large mounts of dirt into hills that will one day be rolling lawns on Pier 1.

Part of the passive recreation area at the foot of Old Fulton Street in Brooklyn Heights is still slated to be open this winter, though the Daily News recently reported that the entire pier wouldn’t be done until next summer.
