The United Military Veterans of Kings County (UMVKC) held its annual Patriotism Award luncheon at the Bay Ridge Manor on Sunday, honoring individuals and organizations who have shown exceptional support for veterans and the local Memorial Day Parade.
Since the award’s inception in 2001, UMVKC has recognized 50 individuals and organizations for their dedication to veterans’ causes and patriotism in Brooklyn.
This year’s honorees included Frank J. Fazzio, Frank Naccarato, Sr., Emily Toro, and the 715th Association.
“It is humbling that so many supported us this year,” Raymond Aalbue, chairman of the Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade and executive director of the United Military Veterans of Kings County, told Brooklyn Paper. “We had a great turnout for the Patriotism Award luncheon at the Bay Ridge Manor hosted by the United Military Veterans of Kings County. It was a far cry from the ten veterans who attended the first luncheon at the Marriott in 2001.”
The first Patriotism Award luncheon was organized nearly a quarter-century ago by revered Brooklyn veterans Eddie Cush and Joe Saia, with just ten veterans in attendance. The inaugural Patriotism Award was presented to World War II veterans Rear Admiral Edward S. Grandin, III (Ret. NYNM), and then-Borough President Howard Golden.
This year’s event packed out the Bay Ridge Manor, where UMVKC also took the opportunity to reinforce its ongoing mission to educate the community about Memorial Day’s importance and promote veterans’ contributions to the nation’s history. To uphold this mission, the organization works closely with veterans’ groups, civic and educational institutions, and youth organizations.
