Persaud prevails

Assembly District 59: Jeffrey Ferretti vs. Roxanne Persaud

Community activist Roxanne Persaud has won Canarsie’s 59th district’s vacant assembly seat by a landslide with nearly 74 percent of the vote.

Persaud was facing Jeffrey Ferretti, a real estate broker and self-described “Republican conservative” for the vacant seat — which has been open since Alan Maisel left the Assembly for the Council.

The win was not surprising, since the area is largely Democratic. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D–Bergen Beach) even nonchalantly referred to Persaud as the next assemblywoman at an October Bergen Beach Civic meeting.

Persaud was endorsed by Canarsie’s Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club and is the president of the 69th Precinct Community Council and a member of Community Board 18.

Another expected win was in the 41st District — Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (D–Flatlands) secured the victory with 87 percent of the vote. Weinstein has been in the Assembly since 1980 and is the chairwoman of the Assembly’s Standing Committee on the Judiciary.
