As week six of the PSAL football season came and went last week, the home stretch to the campaign was right around the corner.
With the playoffs in three weeks, the sixth week of the season separated the contenders from the pretenders as most of Brooklyn’s teams are on their way to the postseason.
Boys & Girls 26, Erasmus Hall 21- There is no doubt that last season was a disappointing year for Boys & Girls as they won only three games, but in six weeks of action, they have already won four, most recently with a 26-21 victory over Erasmus Hall last Saturday.
On the first offensive drive of the game, Boys & Girls RB Kristopher Moton pounded a 24-yard run into the endzone to put the Kangaroos up 6-0 after a missed extra point opportunity.
In the second quarter, Moton extended that lead as he punched in a 3-yard scoring run for a 12-0 Kangaroos lead preceding another missed extra point chance. But Erasmus Hall responded with RB Kristen Liverpool going six yards to the house for a 12-7 Boys & Girls lead as the Dutchmen converted the extra point.
On the ensuing series, the Kangaroos responded. This time it was RB Kadeem Cousar, who took it in for a 65-yard touchdown run to extend the Kangaroo lead to 20-7 after Moton capitalized on a 2-point conversion.
Yet again, the Dutchmen would not be silenced as star RB Liverpool sunk the Kangaroos’ defense with a 1-yard touchdown run but could not convert the extra points chance and trailed 20-13 heading into the half.
In the third quarter, the Kangaroos grinded out a 10 play, 67-yard drive with QB Evan Rugel running six yards for another Boys & Girls touchdown to extend the lead to 26-13 after a failed 2-point conversion attempt.
In the fourth quarter, the Dutchmen needed a huge play to get themselves back into the game – and they did just that. WR Jonathan Yearwood was able to catch a ball right off of his fingertips for an 88-yard touchdown reception to close the gap to 26-21 after a successful 2-point conversion attempt. But that was all the Dutchmen wrote as the Kangaroos ran down the clock in the final two minutes to leap one step closer to a playoff berth.
“I had to make a strong comeback,” said Moton after the game. “I’m trying to lead my team to the playoffs.”
Fort Hamilton 21, Brooklyn Tech 6- Tigers QB Frank Laino and RB Gardner Robinson each had a running touchdown while Brandon Reddish had a 70-yard kick return for another score to extend Fort Hamilton’s winning streak to six consecutive games.
Midwood 36, South Shore 6- Hornets RB Donovan Edwards pounded the football for 109 yards and three running touchdowns. Then, Edwards caught an 85-yard touchdown pass from QB Colin Hannay to get past the struggling South Shore.
Canarsie 20, Grand Street Campus 0- The Canarsie Chiefs running core accumulated 189 rushing yards and all three touchdowns en route to their fourth victory of the season. RB Steven Rene led the way with 107 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown.
JFK 32, Lincoln 8- ‘Splitters QB Elijah Chapman completed 2-of-8 passes for 44 yards and one touchdown, which went to WR Vernon Hodge. But it was not enough for a win, bringing Lincoln’s record to 1-5.
Grady 28, Lehman 6- Falcons RB Ikeem Williams had 28 carries for 212 yards and two touchdowns while fellow back Jasper Kelly had another seven carries for 71 yards and another Grady score.
