Power play! Heavy hitting helps Clones topple Ironbirds

Cyclones 7
Aberdeen Ironbirds 1

June 23 at Ripkin Stadium

Big batting propelled the Cyclones past the Aberdeen Ironbirds in their second game at Ripken Stadium in a show of power unseen since the club’s June 21 win over the reviled Staten Island Yankees.

The Clones broke the game open in the second inning, with left fielder Stefan Sabol, catcher Jeffrey Glenn, third baseman Dimas Ponce, and second baseman Richie Rodriguez all crossing the plate, leaving the team up 4–0.

A two-run dinger from designated hitter Kevin Plawecki in the fifth lifted the score to 6–0 and a solo shot off the bat of shortstop Philip Evans sealed the victory.

Starter Rainy Lara picked up his first win of the season, allowing just two hits, two walks, and no runs in five innings of work. The bullpen held the Ironbirds to one run in the final four frames.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 4498497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] on June 25 at 7 pm as they face the Hudson Valley Renegades.
