Neighbors are hailing a sanitation truck driver as a hero, after the man repeatedly blew his horn to wake up residents and alert them to a fire at a Prospect Lefferts Garden apartment building early Monday morning.
Firefighters arrived at the scene at 292 Hawthorn St. just after 12:35 a.m. on June 12 to find residents fleeing the heavy smoke and fire that had consumed the mixed occupancy building.
Over 100 FDNY personnel utilized four hose-lines to knock down the main body of fire, bringing the blaze under control at 1:37 a.m.
Searches in the ground-floor deli, along with the top four floors of the building found no trapped people.
EMS paramedics tended to one man at the scene, his injuries were described as minor.
The manager of the attached bodega told Brooklyn Paper that his one year toddler was removed from the building suffering from smoke inhalation.
No other injuries were reported. The cause will be determined by the FDNY Fire Marshals office.
