To rollicking rat-tat-tats from a Knights of Columbus brass band, flag-waving girl scout Megan Ryba could hardly contain her smile as she proudly hoisted the Stars & Stripes and helped lead a color guard from Troop 2802 along the Brooklyn Independence Parade in sweltering Dyker Heights, June 26.
Not far behind, true-blue patriots Jack and Carol Pally in Uncle Sam hats, jubilantly waved from their 1978 Corvette, joined a gleaming convoy of vintage cars for the 105th annual, pre-holiday trek along 13th Avenue, from 69th to 86th streets, to celebrate the nation’s 234th birthday.
The tony nabe proved it’s ahead of the rest when it comes to showing its true colors, as residents and visitors poured into the sweltering streets like a red, white and blue river — with Patrol Borough Brooklyn South Chief Joseph Fox as grand marshal — to be part of New York City’s oldest American Independence Day parade, sponsored by the Long Island Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. — Shavana Abruzzo
