Call it “Middle School Musical!”
Middle schoolers from PS 207’s Fillmore Academy Drama Club had the audience singing and dancing in their seats during their production of the Disney favorite “High School Musical Junior” on June 10. The students really shined for their last show of the school year, said the Marine Park school’s art director.
“It was awesome, it was better than expected,” said Antoinette Spada. “Full of enthusiasm and the audience singing along. High energy, lots of dancing, just a fun little show.”
The students had just a few months to rehearse the shortened version of the musical — announced right after their production of “The Little Mermaid” at the end of March — but the kids all did a fabulous job and had the audience going wild to the numbers “Get’cha Head in the Game,” “Stick to the Status Quo,” and “We’re All in this Together,” said Spada.
And the show was swan song for the drama club’s eighth graders, who are graduating and moving on to high school — where hopefully they will continue to shine on stage, said Spada.
“The seniors who have been in many productions, it’s bittersweet, bidding farewell to their journey in the drama club,” she said.
One of those seniors is Gianna Cozzoli, who played one of the leads — the main character Gabriella Montez’s best friend Taylor. She excels both in and out of the classroom and loves nothing more than being on stage, said her mother Margo Cozzoli, who lives in Sheepshead Bay.
“She is a very good kid, and academically too. She loves, loves, loves it,” said Cozzoli. “She loves the teachers in charge, loves all the kids in the production. It’s very sad that it’s the last one.”
