Aspiring Sheepshead Bay artists are learning from the best.
Art students at PS 52 showcased more than 100 original drawings, paintings, and pastels inspired by the works of great artists such as Van Gogh and Monet at the school’s annual end-of-the-year arts fair and music concert on May 25.
Students spent four weeks preparing for the show by studying Van Gogh and Monet, as well as masterpieces by Pierre-August Renoir, Georgia O’Keefe, Andy Warhol, and street artist Keith Haring, said PS 52 art teacher and fair organizer Patricia Radigan.
“The masters inspired them to create their own images,” Radigan said. “It got them really focused.”
Radigan said the easiest artist for the students to copy was Haring — whose street scrawlings from the late 1970s and ’80s are on display at the Brooklyn Museum through July 16.
“Back then we thought Haring was just doing graffiti in the subways — but it turns out he was a genius,” Radigan said. “Students love his pictures because there’s so much action and color. It’s something they really gravitated to.”
In addition to the art fair, PS 52 also held a day-long series of concerts for parents, teachers, and staff.
The student art will be on display in the school’s library and first-floor hallways through the end of the year.
