Push to rename ballfields

The 68th Precinct Youth Council has joined with the family of Richard Sherry to request the renaming of 83rd Street and Shore Road, where the 68th Precinct Youth Council baseball fields are located, in honor of their long-time community leader, who recently passed away.

The request has been submitted to Community Board 10 for their consideration.

Bob Capano, president of the 68th Precinct Youth Council, stated, “Without question, Richard Sherry was one of the driving forces behind the success of the 68th Precinct Youth Council for over 15 years. His name was and will continue to be synonymous with our organization. Richard Sherry was a good friend who personally got me involved with this organization and it is difficult to fill the void created by his loss. However, his legacy will continue and be remembered through his family’s continued involvement in the Youth Council and with this street renaming.”

Sherry served in many capacities with the 68th Precinct Youth Council including as a coach, indoor soccer commissioner, baseball director and treasurer. He was a New York City Firefighter for more than 30 years and was an active union leader for the FDNY. Sherry grew up in Bay Ridge and raised four children as a single father.

The 68th Precinct Youth Council, based in Bay Ridge, has served Brooklyn children for 53 years. Currently, the organization provides baseball, soccer and softball programs for more than 1,100 boys and girls.
