These girls got game.
The Edward R. Murrow all−girls chess team claimed third place at the 6th Annual All−Girls Chess Championships, a culling of top talent from across the nation.
The girls bettered their standing from a year ago, when they took home fourth place. “Our chess players once again performed brilliantly and represented our school with utmost dignity and poise. They all demonstrated their chess skills to the nation. We should be very proud of all of them,” said Murrow coach Eliot Weiss.
Eighteen states participated in the three−day tournament held in Dallas, Texas April 24−26.
“We are definitely improving,” Weiss continued. “In the past, it was very difficult for the girls to win one or two games, and now, we’re winning three or four games,” he added.
The eight−girl team includes Brianna Arrieta, Klaudia Chodnicka, Tabitha Manickawasagar, Nalleley Rosales, Carolyn Vilardi, Ivy Shabieko, Aleksandra Gorshnova and Shu Min Liu.
Weiss said that while chess — a war game at heart — might be stereotyped as a boy’s game, it should not be. “The girls are just as cruel on the chess board,” he said. “You can’t play well being straight or honest. You have to try and fool your opponent. The girls can be just as sneaky as anyone else — and they are.”
Edward R. Murrow H.S. is located at 1600 Avenue L and accepts students throughout Brooklyn.
