Reaching across the pond

Reaching across the pond

The girls at St. Edmund Preparatory celebrated their fifth year of partnership with the girls at St. Edmund Prep in Salisbury England by sending beautiful cards, essays, poems and displays placed in folders for presentation to the families of 9/11 victims.

The relationship began when the Brooklyn girls reached across the pond to their English sisters after the events of September 11, 2001.

Additionally, the girls in England raised a sum of money that was combined with money collected in Brooklyn for a total of $29,000 to be divided between the Windows of Hope Foundation and the establishment of a scholarship fund.

On October 23, 2003, the student body of Saint Edmund Preparatory High School welcomed the St. Edmund Girls School as they launched their initial Exchange Program. The students from England were welcomed by families and students here. The students from Brooklyn were in turn welcomed by the families and students in England.

The partnership formed is truly a partnership that exemplifies the beauty that is humanity. This partnership has flourished for five years and is now expanded to include the boys from Wyvern College in Salisbury, England.

Wyvern College is for boys only between the ages of eleven and sixteen. Wyvern has close links to Saint Edmund Girls School. They share a campus in Salisbury, England. Their joint activities include Performing Arts, charity work and community work through Interact Club.

Saint Edmund Preparatory High School has now expanded the program to include the boys school. Now both genders can share the benefits of this very special program.

This past July from the 7th through the 14th a coed group of twelve St. Edmund Prep students left Brooklyn and joined their new friends in England for an eventful experience. The British hosts arranged tours of their medieval hometown of Salisbury, London, and a Manor House south of Stonehenge, as well as a barbecue complete with a game of skittles (It’s something like bowling.) and a try at cricket.

In October the students from England are planning a visit to Brooklyn, and will stay with host families.

St. Edmund Preparatory HS is located at 2474 Ocean Avenue.
