‘Red Hook High’ to debut at festival – Nabe featured in independent pilot

“Red Hook High,” a new independent television pilot, produced and directed by filmmaker Trac Minh Vu of Dance Theatre Etcetera, a community-based arts organization in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, has been selected to premiere at the New York Television Festival’s Independent Pilot Competition.

Vu is a board member of the community-based arts organization based in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn and the film’s stars are all local Brooklyn teens.

“Red Hook High” will be screened at New World Stages, 340 West 50th Street in Manhattan, September 14 at 1:30 p.m. and September 17 at 4 p.m.

Drawing on his interest in community-based arts and collaborative film-making, Vu developed the script for “Red Hook High” with student actors from arts education programs run by Dance Theatre Etcetera and partner programs Hook Productions/NYC Parks & Recreation, Bailey’s Café and Paul Robeson High School.

Dance Theatre Etcetera teaching artists Robert Martin and Julia Rosenfeld assisted Vu on the pilot and coordinated the program that led to its production.

The characters were developed by the cast, all Brooklyn high school students, in Saturday workshops held at Dance Theatre Etcetera’s facility in Red Hook. All filming for “Red Hook High” was done on location in Red Hook, with the enthusiastic cooperation of local schools and businesses. The creators hope to continue both the television series and the youth arts program that saw its creation.
