A veteran Bravest and humble grassroots gladiator who “left the world a better place than when he entered it” was immortalized when his community hosted a street co−naming in Bay Ridge for the late Richard Sherry.
Tears, cheers and fond memories marked the uplifting tribute to the retired firefighter, who served for three decades as a member of Engine 224 in Brooklyn Heights, led the 68th Precinct Youth Council for 15 years and will be fondly remembered at the permanent tribute to his life and legacy at the corner near where he grew up, 83rd Street and Shore Road – now, also known as “Richard Sherry Way.”
Councilmember Vincent Gentile, who sponsored the legislation for the co−naming, praised the “true son of Bay Ridge” for not only nurturing his family of four children, but also the community which raised and educated him. Sherry attended Our Lady of Angels School, 337 74th Street, and Brooklyn Technical High School in Fort Greene before joining the New York Fire Department.
He was remembered for dispensing his trademark goodwill, cheerful disposition and generosity at the youth council, where he juggled duties as a coach, indoor soccer commissioner, baseball director and treasurer, and spent “countless hours, days and weeks” making sure that the baseball league continued.
