A band of thieves is stealing the wheels off of late-model cars around Williamsburg, and carting them off in black sedans, police said.
The bandits have hit seven cars in the neighborhood during the past two weeks, according to a report.
The most recent theft took place on Dec. 3, when officers say the sneaks broke into an apartment garage on Hope Street between Keap Street and Union Avenue and jacked the tires and rims of four vehicles. The garage’s manager went in at 3:30 that morning and found the cars, a 2013 Ford Flex, a 2014 Audi, a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a 2005 Volvo, all on cinderblocks, a report states. Law enforcement officials say the thieves drove their cargo away in black cars.
Also, on Nov. 30, the wheel raiders hit a 2013 Dodge Challenger parked at Harrison Avenue and Wallabout Street, according to the authorities. The victim said he parked at 11 pm and came back 45 minutes later to find his ride sitting on blocks.
Police are asking people with information about the thefts to call (800) 577–8477, submit tips at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com, or text-message them to 274637, then enter “TIP577”.
