Hundreds of people will flock to Staten Island next week to participate in an annual run honoring a fallen Brooklyn Heights firefighter who didn’t think twice about racing over to the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Friends and family members of Captain Martin J. Egan, Jr. will hold the Second Annual 5K Memorial Run/Walk in his honor on May 4, beginning at 10 a.m.
The run will begin at the Midland Beach Picnic Area near the corner of Fr. Capodanno Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue. Participants will be traversing a flat 3.16 miles along the Promenade and then back to the picnic area, where refreshments will be served.
In 2001, Captain Egan was assigned to Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights before being transferred to Division 15 for specialized training in combating fires in high-rise buildings.
One the morning of September 11, Egan, an avid runner who had participated in the New York City Marathon, was one of the first rescuers to respond to the towers, family members said. He is survived by his wife and two children, ages 9 and 11.
Ladder Company 118 shares quarters with Engine Company 205 on Middagh Street near Henry Street. Both companies have been protecting residents of Brooklyn Heights since 1913.
