The Yavneh Minyan of Flatbush will honor and give Hakarat Hatov to its Mora D’Atra, Rabbi Dr. Moshe Z. Sokol as he celebrates 18 years as the spiritual leader of the minyan.
The Yavneh Minyan Annual Dinner, honoring Rabbi Sokol, will be held at 6 p.m., May 18 at the Young Israel of Avenue K, 2818 Avenue K.
In addition to his work on behalf of the minyan, Sokol is dean for Academic Affairs and professor at the Lander College for Men, a division of Touro College.
At its annual “New Members’ Tea,” the minyan has a tradition of asking its members why they choose to be affiliated with the Yavneh Minyan. The answer invariably given is the presence of Sokol.
Sokol studied for seven years at the Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia. He was ordained at Israel Torah Research Institute (ITRI) in Jerusalem followed by two years of post-semicha study at Yeshiva Torah Vodaath.
He received his Doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Thyssen Foundation Research Fellow and his BA in Philosophy and Comparative Literature, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa at Brooklyn College.
Sokol has published more that two dozen essays in Israeli, British and American journals and books in the fields of Jewish philosophy and ethics.
As a member of the steering committee for the Orthodox Forum, Sokol has chaired three Orthodox Forum conferences. He is a member of the Rabbinical Council of America and the Vaad HaRabbonim of Flatbush.
Featured speakers at the dinner include Rabbi Doctor Bernard Lander, founder and president of Touro College and Rabbi Menachem Genack, Rabbinic administrator and CEO of OU Kosher.
Stuart Feldhamer, president of the Yavneh Minyan, expects the event to be “an unforgettable Yavneh Minyan reunion, as the congregation welcomes back friends and family from far and wide whose lives have been touched by Rabbi Sokol.”
The Yavneh Minyan of Flatbush seeks to promote the spiritual, moral, intellectual and social growth of all its members equally, within a context dictated by Orthodox Jewish interpretation of the Written and Oral laws of the Torah.
In addition to providing a quiet place to daven, the Minyan promotes the dissemination of knowledge of Jewish faith, history, literature, law, and ideals through educational programs, and organizes social events to promote community, family, and friendship.
The Yavneh Minyan’s learning schedule currently includes three weekly classes. Sokol conducts a class on the Rambam’s Hilchot Melachim, immediately after Shabbat morning services. During Seudah Shlishit, Sokol also gives a Mishnah Berurah class.
On Sunday mornings, Yavneh President Stuart Feldhamer conducts a Nach Yomi review shiur. The class starts immediately after Sunday morning services.
