The local unit of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), the Capodanno Division in Staten Island, honored the Bay Ridge Rod & Gun Club (BRRG) for its service and dedication to the youth of the community. Through its Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), the BRRG Club has provided a safe and structured learning environment centered on safe-handling and proficiency with firearms.
The USNSCC’s mission is that “through organization and cooperation with the Department of the Navy, to encourage and aid American youth to develop, train them in seagoing skills, and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues.”
Presenting a plaque commemorating the club’s service, the Commanding Officer of the Capodanno Division, LT Janice Abdelkhalek stated that, “The support of the Bay Ridge Rod & Gun Club has been a vital part of our USN Sea Cadet Corps training program for the past four years. The instructors at the range have taught the cadets many valuable skills and the cadets really enjoy and look forward to their practices.”
The BRRG Club has been a neighborhood-based organization within the Brooklyn community for the past 54 years. Founded in 1954, the organization is the oldest entity in Kings County that encourages legal, organized rifle and pistol shooting among the citizens residing in the New York City area, with an emphasis on safe handling and proper care of firearms. As an integral part of our community, the BRRG Club desires to serve and give back to the community through a number of different volunteer and sponsorship programs.
“It comes as a great pleasure to accept the recognition of such a fine organization as the Sea Cadets. These kids are the cream-of-the-crop, and the honor is ours to be able to host them,” explained Dominick Romano, president of BRRG.
Club Vice President Andrew Windsor added that, “These monthly events really tie into the club being active and giving back to our community. Whether it’s sponsoring a baseball team through the 68th Precinct Youth Council, being an active member on the Bay Ridge Community Council, or providing free Hunter Safety classes, it’s about helping and teaching others. These Cadets represent the future of our country and communities and the time we spend with them now will pay dividends for all of us in the future.”
