Seeing Greene

On July 27, Fort Greene locals will have the chance to become better acquainted with the history behind their picturesque neighborhood.

On that day, Fort Greene will be the sole focus of a Big Onion Walking Tour. Speckled with historical tidbits on everything from stops on the Underground Railroad to the beginnings of The Pratt Institute, the tour was borne from a Brooklyn Neighborhood Tourism Initiative Contest sponsored by the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation.

“[Fort Greene] lends itself perfectly to the breed of the tours we offer,” said Seth Kamil, president of Big Onion. “It’s rich with cultural, literary and architectural record.” Tours, which are generally two hours, begin under the large, red Brooklyn Academy of Music sign.

Big Onion Walking Tours’ “Historic Fort Greene Tour” will meet at 1 pm on July 27 at the intersection of Flatbush and Lafayette avenues in Fort Greene. Tickets are $15. For information, call (212) 439-1090 or visit www.bigonion.com.
