State Sen. Roxanne Persaud, (D–Canarsie) was a ray of sunshine for the seniors at Sunrise Adult Health Care Center on Sept. 6. The caring senator and staff at Sunrise co-hosted a senior resource event where residents had an opportunity to get valuable information about assistance and benefits available to them.
Representatives from agencies at the fair included AARP, American Cancer Society, American Red Cross, Department of Health–Early Intervention, Kingsborough Community College, Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) Program, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, NYC Department of Finance, East New York Farms, NYS Department of Public Service, ConEdison, NYC Fire Department, NYC Department of Environment Protection, HealthFirst, United Healthcare, Office of Health Services–Division of Prevention and Primary Care Insurance and SNAP.
“Many of our seniors live on a fixed income and they also lack information about and access to resources that can assist them to live comfortably and independently. They may have difficulty navigating the complicated phone systems and online resources. At the Senior Resource Day, the seniors have a unique opportunity to meet directly with representatives and get the necessary support,” state Sen. Persaud said.
Along with information and giveaways, the seniors were treated to cold fruit and Italian ices and snow cones, courtesy of Millennium Development Corp.
Not to be left out, seniors exercised their dancing muscles, or were treated to manicures and massages in the green space.
Thanks to the officers in the Community Department of the 69th and 63rd Precincts, the seniors were safe and sound.

Science rules
Broadcom Foundation and Society for Science and the Public announced that borough son Andrei Iosifescu, a student at Hunter College High School, was named to a list of the top 300 competitors in the Broadcom Masters® — the nation’s premier Science, Technology, Engineering and Math competition for middle school students. The top 300 represent middle schools from 35 states.
Andrei was selected from a pool of 2,537 applicants from 48 states, two U.S. territories, and one Department of Defense school. Students were evaluated by a panel of scientists, engineers, and educators, and judged on creativity and originality of their science fair project, their ability to engage in analysis of data, and understanding of Stem principles as they relate to the real world.

Save the date
Madison-Marine–Homecrest Civic Association is calling on the community to help keep the highways and byways ship-shape and in order.
Residents, businesses, schools, religious institutions, elected officials and candidates, along with city agencies — especially New York City’s Sanitation Department and the 61st Precinct — are asked to come on down to the next meeting on Oct. 18 at 7:30 pm to find out the 411 on Operation Clean Up.
The October meeting will focus on planning the week-long (Nov. 25–Dec. 1) effort to clean up the litter, debris, and trash scattered in the neighborhood of Stuart Street to E. 12th Street and Avenue P to Avenue U.
