Move over Carrie and Clay, there are some golden kids on the block and they’re stealing your thunder – at least in Brooklyn.
The borough’s ebullient elders put a sparkling new twist on the phrase, ‘golden oldies’ when they polished up on the vocal chords and belted forth a rainbow of show-stopping gems during the second annual Senior Idol contest at Xaverian High School, 7100 Shore Road, emceed by legendary talk show host Joe Franklin.
The competition – sponsored by AARP Chapter 5055 – drew a bevy of contenders, aged 50 and above, to share the spotlight at the all-boys school, where they belted out crowd-pleasing songs, tickled the funny-bone with hilarious comedy routines, told tall tales as raconteurs and vied for cash prizes and bragging rights.
Spoiled for choice, the judges, who included Xaverian Musical Director Joseph Loposky and producer Jeff Samaha, selected two winners – Tommy Anderson and Phil Terry, who shared the $500 grand prize, donated by Commerce Bank.
Reigning champ Nancy Liatsis surrendered her title with a dulcet duet performed with her daughter.
“It was an amazing night, you could feel the love in the audience,” said Gail Asfazadour, one of the organizers.
The AARP chapter meets on the first Monday of the month at the Bay Ridge Community Service Center, 6935 4th Avenue.
