It was a win that Fontbonne needed. The Bonnies started the season with a brutal first three matches — No. 2 St. Francis Prep, No. 6 Mary Louis and No. 9 Archbishop Molloy this past Monday.
“I told them, ‘We’re at .500, I don’t want to go any lower,’” Strong said. “If we start the season 0-2, forget it.”
That’s exactly what Mary Louis has to contend with. The Hilltoppers fell to Molloy on Tuesday and meet St. Francis Prep on Monday. TMLA actually showed promise in the third set, which it led 22-20. But the serve receive issues it had all night resurfaced again late. Ganun finished the match on a 4-0 service run.
“I know they can do better than that,” Mary Louis coach Sylwia Schober said. “They weren’t here today. Something was missing. I’m working on finding out what.”
Senior outside hitter Samantha Shevach, who had six kills and seven service aces — including four in a row at one point in the third set – has emerged as a prime-time player for the Hilltoppers, who are still without regular hitter Alison Sito (ankle) and Gabriella Mostarac (sick). Lang had 24 assists, libero Victoria Starace had eight digs and Amanda Glodowski added four kills for Fontbonne.
Nestor, though, had the run of the match, and maybe even the year. When that ball was spinning on the net, the junior had just one thought.
“Linda is gonna kill me if this doesn’t go over,” she said.
It’s OK. There wasn’t anything to be horrified about.
