Mr. Boombastic is about to get extra romantic.
Singer and former Flatbush resident Shaggy will serenade his fans at a Valentine’s Day concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Feb. 14. The Jamaica-born crooner said his songs are perfect for singles or sweethearts who want to enjoy a romantic rendezvous at the show.
“I sing a lot of romantic songs, you know,” said Shaggy, who splits his time between Jamaica and Long Island. “It is all dedicated to the ladies.”
The Grammy-winning singer, who is arguably best known for his early-2000s hits “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel,” said the show will have a mix of his early music — “the classics” — and newer music, including his latest single “I Need Your Love.” The reggae royal will be joined on-stage with fellow singers Maxi Priest and Sanchez.
Shaggy, who grew up in Jamaica but lived in Flatbush as an adult, said that Brooklyn still has some of the Caribbean culture he craves, even though it has changed tremendously in the past few decades.
“There are lot of Caucasians up in there,” he said, but added that not all areas have been gentrified. “You still have the places where you can get your jerk chicken.”
Shaggy performed a packed show in Prospect Park in 2013, and said he always looks forward to coming back to hip-hop hot-spot.
“Brooklyn is the mecca,” he said.
