enowned for defying convention, Brooklyn Philharmonic Music Director Michael Christie and the Brooklyn Philharmonic will continue to embrace the unexpected by performing a free outdoor concert, which includes a performance of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams’ celebrated piece, “Shaker Loops,” accompanied by a synchronized fireworks display, June 14 at 8 p.m. at New York City’s South Street Seaport. The event is free to all.
In selecting the four-movement “Shaker Loops” — music never before performed with live fireworks accompaniment — Music Director Christie is challenging both his orchestra and his audiences to think beyond safe, traditional firework pairings, such as Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.”
The “hauntingly ethereal” nature of Adams’ work, while rooted in American Minimalism, displays a dynamic, almost electrically charged element that makes it an ideal choice for fireworks.
The free outdoor concert will also include great works for string orchestra, with the performance culminating in the spectacular combination of Adams’ celebrated “Shaker Loops” and synchronized fireworks.
The 9:30 p.m. fireworks show — produced by Zambelli, one of the oldest family-run fireworks companies — rivals any major pyrotechnic celebration in New York City.
