It was a beautiful day in East Williamsburg at the Sunshine Community Garden, which held a community barbecue to celebrate the hard work members had put in weeding, cleaning and planting during chillier months. More than two dozen community members came to celebrate the garden which has been delighting Graham Avenue residents for 17 years.
“This was a vacant lot once where drug addicts and prostitutes hung out,” said Community Board 1 member and Garden Club member Dealice Fuller. “People wouldn’t park their cars and wouldn’t walk on this block. Now people walk down the street and look through the fence into the garden.”
The garden has received assistance from Councilmember Diana Reyna and Assemblymember Vito Lopez, as well as a number of volunteers from both offices for the hard work of raking and planting earlier this year. Its highlights include a wicker archway adorned with rose vines, a peach tree, several tomato and pepper plants, a grape arbor, and the stately wrought iron garden gate.
Sunshine Community Garden is located on 99-100 McKibben Street, between Graham and Manhattan Avenues in East Williamsburg.
