Grand Street Campus benched a controversial, record-setting football coach on Wednesday.
Wolves head man Bruce Eugene says he was suspended without pay because he and the administration have been at loggerheads over funding.
“All the principal sees is dollar signs,” he said.
Eugene spoke with this paper late Wednesday, but the school did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The boisterous coach, who revels in wearing hoodies reading “NY’s most hated,” took hits last year for letting running back Rahmel Ashby continue playing following an arrest on gun-possession charges. But the Wolves squad won its first city championship a few months later under Eugene — the first black coach to take a team that far — and Ashby racked up 116 yards during the win.
Eugene claims the administration refuses to recognize the team’s accomplishments. The league gave the Wolves a banner and trophy last year, but school isn’t displaying either, the coach said.
“We won a championship last year and you wouldn’t even know it,” Eugene said. “There was no celebration. Our banner is not put up. Our trophy is not in the trophy case. It was like it was all for nothing.”
