Councilwoman Sara M. González joined dozens of members of the Sunset Park High School Task Force and numerous officials from the School Construction Authority in a special preview of the new facility which is in the final stages of completion.

When the high school officially opens this month, it will mark the culmination of four decades of struggle to make that day a reality. González joined the battle early on, working with Community Board 7 in the 1970s and continued throughout her years as a board member and CB7 chair.

The councilwoman extended her appreciation to her constituents, the community board, community groups, parents, students, teachers and her colleagues in government for their collective efforts to finally bring a high school to Sunset Park.

Gonzalez emphasized that the perseverance of the community, despite numerous obstacles and delays, was a driving force resulting in the completion of the facility. The task force, of which she is a member, has been remarkably successful in designing programs and curricula that are unique in this city.

Labeled a ‘hybrid’ design, the school will house three academies under the guidance of a single principal, Corrine Vidal. Sunset Park High School will be a fully air-conditioned, fully accessible high school, which includes separate administrative spaces, standard classrooms, specialty rooms for each school, such as Science Lab/Demo rooms, Technology/ Distance-Learning room and Performing Arts room. Common facilities include a kitchen complex/dining area, multi purpose auxiliary rooms, a 550 seat auditorium, full competition gymnasium and a 4,000 square feet wireless technology library.
