When the sun smiles, the urban oasis comes to life, beckoning the contemplative to come and rest by its gentle waterfalls, and reflect by its ponds purring with fish.
Visitors on the American Solar Energy Society’s Annual Green Buildings Tour did just that when they stopped at Park Slope’s flagship conservation and renewable alternative energy sanctuary – the “6/15 Community Garden” at 6th Avenue and 15th Street.
The verdant haven boasts three waterfalls powered directly into two ponds by a pair of solar modules, in addition to seating in a charming open space, fondly known as “Godzilla’s Place” to honor departed neighbors “who have fought for the good of life,” and named in memory of a fish called “Godzilla,” who died a natural death at the jaws of a raccoon.
The area’s flagship conservation site is maintained by volunteers for the community to experience its “unique configuration” as a social, cultural, botanical and vegetable garden.
The renewable alternative energy system was designed and constructed by Tracy Fitz, founder of City Solar, who integrates sustainable energy installations within nature and the community.
