Brooklyn’s Satmar Orthodox Jews are making no bones about their distaste for what they say is the ongoing desecration of their holy cemeteries in Toleda, Spain.
More than 3,000 observers and their leaders assembled at the Brooklyn Marriott, 333 Adams Street, to call upon the Spanish government to halt the development of real estate at the final resting places of Jews buried in Spain before the Jewish expulsion from that country in the 15th century.
Relocation of the graves is unacceptable to some in the Orthodox community because they should be left alone “for eternity.”
At issue is the disruption of burial sites during the construction of a housing complex in Catalonia and a road in Andalusia, and the return of more than 500 skeletons excavated by archaeologists from Jewish graves in Barcelona as far back as 50 years ago, currently being held in storage.
