That’s no wasteland, that’s prime parkland, say Gowanus activists who are working to create an “environmentally conscious public park space,” around the canal.
You read that correctly.
The Gowanus Canal Conservancy wants to turn the banks of the dirty canal into “Sponge Park,” with shady trees, a public esplanade and waterfront recreating.
The park earns its name, the group says, because it will help fight the sewage problem that has made the area so repellant in the past.
