New York’s biggest artist-run art show will open May 10 on the waterfront in Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood. “Spring ahead” will present new works by more than 330 artists. Wide ranging styles from cutting edge to classic in both 2D and 3D media will be shown.
The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s Spring Art Show fills a 25,000-square-foot gallery in a wonderful Civil War-era warehouse. Seeing the space alone is worth the trip. More than 1,500 paintings, drawings, photographs, mixed media and sculptures will be on sale and buyers will be able to take them home at the time of purchase.
Eric Pesso is this show’s featured artist. He transforms big tree trunks into light, airy structures of beauty and elegance. Each sculpture, no matter how complex, is carved by hand from a single log. He is intrigued by symmetry and geometry. His background in mathematics is seen in his highly structured work. Each step in the process, from initial concept to modeling, carving, and shaping, is as important as the finished piece. The 13 graceful pieces present that sensibility.
The show will open on May 10 at 1 p.m., with a Meet the Artists reception, and live music by River Alexander’s Mad Jazz Hatters, who deliver a vibrant madcap mix of hot speakeasy jazz and jubilant jugband fervor straight out of the ’10s and ’20s.
The opening weekend continues on Sunday with live music by percussionists/composers Thomas Kozumplik and Lorne Watson’s Loop 2.4.3. They have become active figures in a cross-world of musical genres, performing with such artists as Clogs, The Books, Willie McBlind (Jon Catler), and their late mentor Robert Hohner. Most weekends will have free live music performances.
The BWAC Spring Art Show will also feature the very popular silent auction wall again, which gives buyers and art enthusiasts an exciting possibility to bid on smaller and very affordable pieces of art.
“Spring ahead” will run on weekends through June 15 from 1-6 p.m. The exhibition is located at 499 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook (across the street from the Fairway Market).
