The Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corp. has purchased and planted baskets on the historic street lamps and planters on the Avenue with a generous $1,000 donation from Sovereign Bank. Placed on Atlantic Avenue, near Nevins Street, they are being maintained by the Super Wash Laundromat. Baskets, flowing with foliage and flowers, are located along the avenue between Clinton Street and Third Avenue and maintained by the stores and/or building owners.
Sovereign Bank honored the Atlantic Avenue winners of last year’s “Greenest Block in Brooklyn” competition at a special reception. The avenue captured an outstanding number of awards including: First Place (Hoyt Street, between State and Atlantic), Second Place (Atlantic, between Third and Nevins), Honorable Mention (Atlantic between Nevins and Bond), Second Place Store Front (Brawata Café) and Third Place Storefront (Dig).
This year, blocks along the avenue once again participated in the contest for the “Greenest Commercial Block in Brooklyn,” sponsored by the Borough President and Brooklyn Greenbridge of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
It is hoped that this effort will spur more ‘greening’ on the thoroughfare, thus making Atlantic Avenue an even more enjoyable place to visit and shop.
