I watch, with great disappointment, Jesse Watters ask simple questions to the twenty-something crowd. Most of them admit to being college students but if they are serious about their answers I have to believe that they have nothing but rice pudding between their ears. Do the producers of his segment telecast only the dumb answers and cut the intelligent ones? I really don’t know, so I decided to do a Watters World survey on my own. I asked twenty people of high school and college age the following question: “On July 4th we celebrated the birthday of the United States of America. How old is the U.S.?”
We declared our independence in the year 1776. Subtract 1776 from 2014 and we learn that our nation is 238 years old. I was very disappointed to learn that only ten people gave me the correct answer.
Questions are asked for several reasons. Sometimes to gain information. Sometimes to test one’s knowledge. Then there are times when the question itself makes a statement. Here are some to think about.
