Standing for valor and courage

A 21−gun salute and static displays provided the pageantry when borough patriots flocked to Fort Hamilton Army Base to view a parade of ships as it sailed along New York Harbor, jumpstarting Fleet Week in New York with a bang.

The annual marine commemoration drew mom, dad and the kids to the historic garrison, where they participated in a pomp−filled program of naval thrills and watched the vessels pass from the bluff near 101st Street and 4th Avenue.

In addition, the fort hosted the unveiling and dedication of two historical markers, commemorating an important episode in American history. The signs, associated with the New York State Revolutionary War Heritage Trail, commemorate Fort Hamilton’s Narrows Overlook site, where a British invasion force was observed on August 22, 1776; and the Battle of Brooklyn, resulting in the defeat of the Continental Army five days later.
