Music lovers wait all year long for summer to bring some of the most acclaimed recording artists on today’s music scene to a Brooklyn stage – and this year is no exception.
Michael Bolton, Erykah Badu, Smokey Robinson and Patti LaBelle are just a handful of the superstars that’ll be part of the Seaside Summer Concert Series at Asser Levy Park and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series at Wingate Field this summer.
Thursday nights at Asser Levy Park, located on Surf Avenue at West 5th Street in Coney Island will be rocking with the sounds of Brian Wilson, Huey Lewis and the News, and Starship, while Monday nights at Wingate Field, located at Winthrop Street between Brooklyn and Kingston avenues, in East Flatbush will be stirring with the music of the O’Jays, Mary Mary and Mighty Sparrow.
“It’s amazing the way that it all started to what it’s become,” concert series Executive Director Deborah Garcia told this newspaper. “The concerts have a fantastic reputation in the music industry.”
Liza Minnelli fans will be thrilled to learn that the legendary performer will also be returning to Asser Levy Park this summer.
This is the 30th anniversary for the Seaside Concert Series and the 26th anniversary for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series.
“Sports, religion, family, and music – that’s what brings Brooklynites together, which is why I have looked forward to hosting free concerts every week in Central Brooklyn for 26 years now, and in Brighton Beach-Coney Island for the last three decades,” said Borough President Marty Markowitz.
Admission to all the shows is free. Concert goers coming down to Asser Levy Park are advised to come early and bring a blanket. Seat rentals are available for a $5 fee.
Seating at Wingate Field is limited, so concert goers there are urged to bring their own chairs.
Between 8,000 and 15,000 regularly attend the shows.
All performances will be projected on large screens set up around the stage for enhanced viewing.
Leave your camera and pets at home, however. There’s also no alcohol and no smoking allowed.
“From LL Cool J to the B-52’s to Al Green to Liza, Julio Iglesias and Roberta Flack, stars who have performed all over the world know they’ve hit the big time when they take the stage in Brooklyn, USA,” Markowitz declared,” and this year’s shows promise to be the most exciting yet.”
