Kingsborough grad and Scepter editor-in-chief Michelle Yedin was chosen as one of 50 students to take part in the inaugural “College Reporter Day” at the White House last month. Michelle graduates this June with a degree in journalism and was the only City University of New York student — one of only three community colleges — selected, nationwide.
Michelle — an Honors student, a Presidential Scholar, and the recipient of a Retiree Scholarship — started the event-of-a-lifetime with other students in the James Brady Press Briefing Room, then it was off to Eisenhower Executive Offices, and a meeting with members of the Obama administration and the press corps. The group returned to the press briefing room and was met by White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest — with a surprise visit by President Obama!
Michelle has been plying pen to paper since a senior at Madison High School, where her journalism teacher encouraged her to pursue her writing. She credits finding her journalistic niche to Kingsborough.
“Had I not gone here, I don’t know what opportunities would have come my way,” said Michelle, who also met with Sen. Charles Schumer (D–New York), went to a Bernie Sanders rally, and took part in the National Model United Nations.
The White House experience pointed Michelle in the next direction in her journey — she hopes to attend George Washington University or Brooklyn College in the fall to continue her education.
