Museum menace pleads guilty
One of the Brooklyn Museum’s biggest donors in 2010 will be the guy who bilked the art institution of over $600K.
Dwight Newton, the Museum’s former payroll manager, agreed to pay back the $620,000 he stole from the Eastern Parkway museum over the last three years. His ruse was discovered earlier this year when administration officials learned he was cutting checks to imaginary employees, which were then deposited into his own account.
Officials said that Newton would write checks out to employees named “Brooklyn Museum,” “Brooklyn” or “ZYK” -- proving that his scam didn’t pride itself on creativity.
As part of the plea deal, Newton will not only have to pay the money back, but will also have to spend 63 months in prison and pay a fine of $250,000.
