A team in a new town needs a new name, right?

New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has filed paperwork with the NBA to change the name of the Brooklyn-bound team — setting the stage for countless arguments at sports bars across the borough.

“The name change will happen in 2012,” Prokhorov told Forbes Russia magazine, referring to the season when the team is expected to play in the Barclays Center at the intersection of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues.

It is unclear what the shooting Tsar actually has planned, though — apparently the paperwork needs to be filed even just to change the team name from “New Jersey Nets” to the “Brooklyn Nets.”

Previously, Prokhorov had joked to reporters that he would change the name of the team to his current girlfriend, and that every time he broke up with her, he would change the name again.

Still, the possibility remains of a completely new team name with a new logo, new nicknames, and a whole new image, so the time to chime in is now.

In the spirit of new beginnings, we’re asking our readers to send in their proposed name for the Brooklyn squad by e-mailing the new monicker to newsroom@cnglocal.com. We’ll pass them along to our friends at the Nets — and publish a story with our favorites.

Send your suggestion to newsroom@cnglocal. Please include your name and daytime phone number, so we can get back to you.

Brooklyn Traffic Jam
Probably shortened to Brooklyn Jammers

Brooklyn Dodgers were originally Trolly Dodgers so the traffic conditions at the Atlantic yards will be an appropriate name for the team.

As to NY teams shortening their names. New York Knickerbockers are NY Knicks. NY Metropolitans aren NY Mets.

Brooklyn Jammers
would follow both Brooklyn and NY team naming tradition.

This team has had the name NETS since it's inception into the ABA. What is the need to change it??? Lets win an NBA Championship with the same name! Think about it the name NETS is a perfect basketball name. Other teams have names that even correspond to basketball do we want to be like those teams? Come to think about it not many teams have a name that directly reflect basketball terminology. Let's be different and save this name for basketball sake!

The best new name is the Brooklyn Bridge not the Brooklyn Bridges but simply Brooklyn Bridge.

Reasons why.
1) bridges symbolize stability
2) The Brooklyn Bridge is Brooklyn's most iconic Structure
3) it is a sensible choice and it actually relates to the city unlike teams like the lakers and jazz
4)Just imagine the creativity that could be put in to the logo.
5) it has a nice ring to it ( just imagine hearing the arena announcer say " and now here they are your Brooklyn Bridge"

First and foremost, we cannot forget that New York's (Brooklyn bred) son, Sean "Jay-Z" Carter has some stock in this team. So out of respect to him and the many stars who came up out of that tough and well recognized city, I think either New York or Brooklyn "Stars" or "Icons" are good suggestions. But I have to be honest I like "Brooklyn Bridge" Aka "The Bridge". Imagine future would be NBA hopefuls wanting to play for "The Bridge" out of NYC? Catchy!
