Midwood’s weather forecast for Monday: Cloudy with a chance of religious oddballs.

Members of the hate-mongering, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, who brought their anti-Jewish, anti-gay rhetoric to the borough last fall, will visit Midwood next week as part of their “Godsmack Tour.”

According to the Church’s website,, members of the unhinged right-wing Christian God squad plan to protest outside of Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin on Coney Island Avenue between avenues L and M as well as Chabad of Kensington and Yeshiva Torah Teminah, both on Ocean Parkway between Ditmas and 18th avenues on Oct. 11, beginning at 12:30 pm.

“We will picket to remind the Jews that a remnant of them will be saved if they turn to their God, but that the rest will be cast into everlasting fire in hell,” noted the website. “The Lord’s promises are good and he has promised to save 144,000 obedient Jews who hearken his commandments and repent. The rest of the Jews represent the disobedient masses of mankind who will dwell eternally where the worm that eats them never dies and the fire ascend up forever and ever.”

Neighborhood religious and political leaders are already preparing counterprotests, according to Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D–Borough Park).

“The Westboro Baptist Church is nothing more than a veiled neo-Nazi group spewing venom and bile indiscriminately,” said Hikind. “I cannot and will not stand idly by while these sick individuals disparage and vilify Jews, rehashing age-old anti-Semitic canards such as the Jews killed Jesus.”

Westboro’s anti-Jewish and anti-gay hate speak is well established.

When they came to Brooklyn last October, Westboro protestors — about seven in total, including small children — held placards reading, “Jews Killed Jesus,” “Israel is doomed,” “Jews stole the land” and “Mourn for your sins.”

But Brooklyn counter-protestors — who outnumbered the Westboro group 30 to one according to some accounts — shouted down the religious zealots, sending them back to Kansas with their tails between their legs.

Westboro members were beaten, but left unbowed, as this new round of protests prove.

The group’s still proudly standing behind its backwater beliefs, claiming their blitzkrieg protests are actually “warnings.”

“[The Jews’] time is about gone and they have to be held accountable for spilling the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ,” Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokeswoman and attorney for the church told us last year. Attempts to reach her were unsuccessful Wednesday as we reached our deadline. “We want [the Jews] to understand that we will be the fateful witnesses in the spirit of grace and supplication and that we will mourn for them when their time comes.”

Westboro Baptist Church Case Founded On Big "Lie"

by Thurman Boyd Hayes

Right now the attorneys for the Westboro Church are arguing in our nation's highest court to defend their right to free speech. I support their right to free speech, however, I cannot, will not and never will support their right to harass the families of our slain war dead over an issue which on its face is a complete and demonstrable lie. The lie in this case is the very thing that the Westboro Baptist Church is in the Supreme Court arguing over the right to speak. That lie, that obvious and blatant falsehood, that despicable and obscene fraud, with which they have tortured numerous families across the country in their screeching, banshee like voices, and pathetic placards, is proof that these people are not rational in the least and are certainly driven by sheer, mindless hatred. Westboro Baptist Church's message is that we have slain soldiers because of abortion and homosexuality in America. They base this on passages from the Old Testament where God says he will punish the Israel for a variety of sins if they commit them.

I am not going to argue the merits of their interpretation, the existence of God or the historical accuracy of the Biblical account. I'm just going by the obvious historical facts and the claims that the Westboro Baptist Church itself has made. They show up at these funerals claiming that we should "Thank God for Dead Soldiers". Fine. When have we not had dead soldiers from a war? The answer is obvious - we have always had our American dead from any conflict that we've significantly engaged in. In fact, from the war in Viet Nam, the U.S. KIA numbers were around some 58,000 at a time when homosexuality was not in as much prominence as it is now, while just in 1990, during the original Gulf War, the U.S. lost only a few service people. Meanwhile, total American casualties from the war which founded this nation were 5 times higher than they are now from the current wars over which the Westboro Baptist Church is arguing that the casualties are caused by a sinful nation condoning homosexuality. Those were the days of the Founding Fathers that the Church believes were when the nation was closer to God and yet the casualties were 5 times greater - 25,000 versus the current 4,000 . The American loses from the Civil War were even more staggering - over a half a million total, and yet homosexuality was a crime in all states of the Union and the Confederacy.

The facts are that the Westboro Baptist Church is fighting for the right, in the nation's highest court, to continue torturing grieving American families with one of the greatest bold faced lies ever concocted. A lie that they have only been able to get away with because no one has had the guts and the brains to point out its obvious idiocy and stand-up to them and call them the liars that they are. For the sake of the families that have been subjected to their disgusting deceit, and the memories of their loved ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice, let me then be the first to say that the Westboro Baptist Church's message is a filthy lie and for that, all the members responsible should be damned...

K. from Arkady says:
The book of Leviticus is quite a collection of neurotic obsessive/compulsive constraints; everything from the butt-sex to shellfish is considered an "abomination" and thus damning the practitioner to the place where "where the worm that eats them never dies and the fire ascend up forever and ever" ( presumably they mean Newark here ). Notably absent from this long list of sins is a father having sex with his female children. In fact, you will find in Genesis 19 support for this practice, as Lot gets drunk and has sex with his underage daughters. They then bear children. And God approves of this. I suggest to those investigating the WBC that this be looked into, as the church is one very large single family and it is clear to me that they are, if not anything else, careful biblical scholars.

Also, in answer to Thurman Hayes, shellfish. Our rampant shellfish eating caused the deaths of all those confederate and union soldiers.

hanna from midwood says:
Christianity has been always a Satanic religion spreading hatred, greed, and bloodshed specially against Jews around the world for 2000 years. Every time the church was greedy for money they killed Jews and took everything that had. I'm happy they are coming to brooklyn. we Jews usually dont' teach our kids hatred of other religions and they dont' know how evil other religions can be. now when they see these satanic Christians in front of their Yeshiva they will know why so many Jews have been killed by evil followers of Jesus. will God ever forgive Jesus for teaching so much hatred, greed and evil, if he really did so? Jesus was a Jew and would never teach hatred. his Pagan followers used his name to make a new hateful religion. Jewish bible dosnt' teach that whoever dosn't worship God will go to hell. even idol worshippers dont' go to hell.

Shana from Midwood says:
The Westboro Baptist Church is a group of hate-mongering fools who take their lunatic patrol on the road and think they speak in the name of anyone but themselves. I just hope that everyone keeps a cool head on these days because these crazy people have rabid attack lawyers and a tendency to be lawsuit-happy.

Stand up against this kind of evil in our communities as much as we can - these people best know they can't come into Brooklyn and think they can get away with this kind of hate.
Oct. 9, 2010, 11:01 pm
teemer from Canada says:
To Hanna from Midwood. I' m aCatholic Christians coming from a large family , I was never thought in my home and in my church to hate people who didn't share my faith. We are all God's children if I read my Bible right! You must misread your Torah, because in the 10 Commandments given to Moses by God, it's says you shall not worshipped any other gods! If your putting all christians in the same boat by calling us a Satanic Christians, then your doing the same thing that these heretic(crazy) from the Wesboro so-called church. My faith tells me that will be judge by God and God Alone and not by mankind! Even my people has suffered a deportation from our country 250 years ago, it's was nothing compare to the suffering of the Jewish people during the Holocaust! Life is to short, I don't have the time to Hate! Evil is roaming all over the planet in every community and in in every religion. Best wishes to you and your family.
Oct. 10, 2010, 2:46 am
teemer from Canada says:
Where does all this hate of other religions comes from?
My dear friend , all you have to do is read to the biography of Martin Luther.
Every major religion as One Bible! The Catholics have one Bible, the Jews has One Bible the Torah and the Muslims One bible the Koran.
Now how many bibles does the protestant church have? Lost the count a long time ago. When one of Martin Luther's doctrine stated that from now on, everyone was entitle to read and interpret the Bible as it seems fit to them! This has created the biggest mess in christianity. Today there is about 2,500 different protestant churches in the U.S. And every single church is suppose to be better than the other one. So how on earth can you guess who's teaching you the truth?
Oct. 10, 2010, 3:26 am
Hanna from midwood says:
To teemer from Canada: I am not calling Christians Satanic. I am calling the religion Satanic. I understand religions by what their followers say they belive in not by what it says in books written some thousands of years ago. If a religions says you are better than others and have the right to hate and kill them it means its a Satanic regligion becuase only Satan orders human being to hate and kill. the last 2000 years of history shows that Christians belived and acted exactly like these crazy baptists. Coming from an Islamic Fascist country (Iran) to America, where people get arrested for converting to Christianity, to live in democracy, I can see so many Christians from different here denominations acting exactly the same as Islamists, but fortunatley only by words becuase they the law dosn't let them do as they like. you just have to look at the racism that black catholics who come fresh from Haiti show. They didn't live in Western countries and their religious hatred is as what Chatolic preachers have taught them. Why don't Christians and Moslems concentrate more on teaching their folks to leave other people alone and focus on making themselves better people? We Jews dont' teach our kids that they should force their ideas on other people. Where does it say in Jewish bible that idol worshipers will go to hell or that Jews shoudl force worship of God on Idol worshippers?

I can honestly tell you , that if some priest, reverend , pastor or rabbi would to tell me that I would have to Hate in order to practice my Faith, I would be the first one to send them to hell!

Pax from Park Slope says:
Be careful. Many of the adults in the Phelps family are lawyers. They support their sick mission by suing the police in the towns and cities any time they are physically attacked. They win often. Bring signs, chant, moon them, turn your back to them, but do not do anything that could be interpreted as a physical attack or they will sue, they will win, and you will end up helping them. Also, they bring their little kids with them and use them as "human shields." The parents are nuts, I feel very sorry for those poor kids.

Teemer from Canada says:
As for the children , my heart goes to them. No children were born with hate, they were taught to hate. Concerning the Wesboro children, this nothing more than mental child abuses!
I agree with Pax from Park slope. But what if the people would make enough to the point where nobody can understand their evil and malicious messages?
For example fire trucks , sirens and even hard rock band if you have to! and the medias could show their pictures or videos , but with No sound! And this no matter where they go. After awhile it would be useless for them to try get evil messages out to the public...

To Hannah from Midwood... you're missing the point... In every century we were mistreated not because their religion or people were bad, since we were bad.... Teemer from Canada is right.... you are stereotyping every chrisitian for no good reason.... LIVE AND LET LIVE ..... In all religions theres the ones who hate, and make a bad name for the whole community.... You don't like it as a Jew, I'm sure that when there were Ponzi schemes done by Jews, and pple would call you thief, or liar right?!? The pple from Kansas are immature, not happy with their life, so they looking who to blame their problems at.... just everybody remember.... it's important to respect every human being and religion.... live your life to the fullest.... Isn't there enough problems without having to worry about hating others???

shoshana from long beach says:
First, the Romans killed Jesus. I don't see these people talk about how evil the Romans were. I'm glad we have freedom of speech but most violent incidents were based on peoles' speeches. There has to be a limit to what and where pepole can say things. Making prejitious and hateful comments in front of small children is terrfifying for them. These people are crazy and we have no idea what they can do. The speeches should not be made in public in front of yeshivas where kids will be afraid to go to school. I'm proud of courageous peoplw who are standing up to defend themselves.

to ct from Midwood.
Thanks for your support.
My question is. who are we to judge the people living 2 thousand years ago? If Jesus would have been born in Canada or U.S . The same thing would have happen, because the death of God's only Son, was prophesied in the Old Testament a long time before the birth of Christ! It had to happen that was in God's plan to save humankind.Jesus died for His Love of the people . Jesus was not trying to have a reason to hate humanity even though He would have every right to! God's number one command to us is to Love one another!
