Mighty Zeus must be giving them an A−plus from the heavens above.
The king of gods and his legion of deities provided inspiration enough for budding Rembrandts at McKinley Junior High School, who reaped the fruits of their labors by unveiling the final section of a three−part, three−year creative project – a majestic mural about Greek mythology and its relation to the Big Apple’s architecture.
Gracing the third−floor hallway of the Bay Ridge school, 73rd Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway, the dynamic student−teacher collaboration features an inter−galactic explosion of color, interspersed with mythological and modern figures, and their influence on the construction and architectural details of such imposing New York City structures as Rockefeller Center, and the Chrysler and Empire State buildings.
The final segment, unveiled with a ribbon−cutting attended by Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, paid tribute to the movies of the 1930s and their connection to Greek mythology, including ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” Pygmalion” and “The Wizard of Oz,” which re−tells the story of Homer’s Odyssey.
