A man committed suicide on Park Slope’s Fourth Street on Monday morning, and cops locked down the block between Sixth and Seventh avenues as a hazmat team removed a suspicious container of fluid that was found next to the man’s body.
Cops later determined that the clear liquid was cyanide, a deadly chemical. They also found a suicide note that was apparently penned by the 65-year-old man.
The victim’s wife had found the body in the basement of their home at around 7:30 am.
Nervous thug
A thief robbed a woman on April 16 by shoving what she believed was a gun into her back — but only got $3 in the crime.
The 35-year-old victim told cops that she was just at the door of her Warren Street home when the 18- to 22-year-old hood approached her from behind, shoved something against her back and demanded her wallet.
After she complied, handing over the virtually empty wallet, she watched him as he fled towards Fourth Avenue. She told cops that the “clean and nervous” perp was wearing a white hooded shirt with a “multi-colored pattern all over it,” baggy jeans and white sneakers with an orange Nike logo. The 5-foot10, 160-pound man also wore his long hair in braids.
Death not proud
Someone took advantage of a widower’s pain, stealing more than $5,300 from a President Street man in the wake of his wife’s death last year.
The 84-year-old man told cops that “numerous” people have been in his apartment, which is between Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West, since his wife died in December.
He also told police that he did not recall moving the items — including necklaces and other jewels — since his wife died.
Girl on girl
A woman smacked her girlfriend on the head with a shoe in an all-out row on Third Avenue on April 19.
The victim told cops that she and her girlfriend, 34, were arguing at the corner of Carroll Street at around 4 pm when the girlfriend pulled off her shoe and started hitting her 38-year-old pal with it.
The shoe-beater was arrested and changed with assault.
Bad guest
A man who invited another man to spend the night in his Flatbush Avenue apartment on April 19 woke up to find that the man — and his Apple toys — had been stolen.
The victim, 35, told cops that he and his overnight guest entered the apartment, which is between Bergen and Dean streets, at around 2:30 am.
When he woke up, the clear light of day showed him what he might have not detected the night before: the man was gone, along with a laptop, iPod and $200.
Bar gain
Cops arrested three people on April 19 for stealing a woman’s bag from a popular new place to enjoy a dram or two on Ninth Street.
The victim told cops that she had been enjoying a pint at just after midnight when she noticed that her bag was missing from the bar, which is between Fifth and Sixth avenues.
Cops later arrested three people — a woman and two men — who were in possession of the victim’s stuff, including an iPod inscribed with the words, “If your feet are on the ground” and signed “Aaron.”
Lots of burgs
Burglars ran wild in Park Slope last week, with six break-ins reported.
• A man who left the door on his 15th Street apartment wide open on April 15 discovered that disregarding basic security is not a good idea. Cops say a thief let himself in and took $100 from the unit, which is between Third and Fourth avenues.
• A thief busted into a home at Seventh Avenue and Carroll Street on April 18, taking a laptop and a DVD player, cops said.
• A Fifth Avenue apartment, at Warren Street, yielded a $10,000 haul for a quick-moving burglar on April 14.
• A much-loved hot dog shop on Fifth Avenue, between Fourth and Fifth streets, was broken into overnight on April 15 — tax day! — and robbed of $900 and blank business checks.
• A woman returning to her Sixth Avenue apartment after a day at the office on April 16 found that her lock had been busted open, but nothing was taken from the unit, which is at St. Marks Place.
