More than 100 people trekked from across the borough to celebrate Chinese New Year and the 18th anniversary of a Sunset Park business on Jan. 8. Revelers ushered in the year of the rooster at the Golden Imperial Palace on 62nd street near Sixth Avenue with Cantonese dim sum, a magic show, and dancing. The event was a festive spectacle that drew locals closer, said one dinner guest.

“It was really lovely,” said Borough Parker Ruth Karmar. “The food was delicious, the music was great. It was very festive. And they served us at these big round tables so my friend and I got to meet all sorts of interesting people. It really added to the evening.”

The event was in honor of the success of L & M Tours — a Sunset Park travel agency that has hosted lavish tour-bus getaways across the Northeast and Canada for more than 18 years. But it also celebrated a new year on the lunar calendar — which rolls over on Jan. 28.

A magician dressed in vibrant robes dazzled audiences with a fire breathing routine, party-goers broke out their best moves on the dance floor, and dinner guests chowed on Chinese favorites such as shrimp and broccoli, sweet-and-sour chicken, and lo mein.
