Surging Cyclones sweep Vermont

Cyclones 5
Lake Monsters 4

July 24, at Vermont (14 inns.)

Last year’s heroes J.R. Voyles and Jason Jacobs were instrumental in last night’s heroic, come-from-behind, extra-inning victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters, a win that completed a three-game sweep of the pesky Burlington gang and raised the Cyclone record to 22-21.

Voyles hit a double in the 14th and was promptly knocked in by Jacobs, who is back from the Mets Class A St. Lucie affiliate.

The game-winning run in the 14th came as Cyclone relievers — Wendy Rosa, Steve Clyne and Jeffrey Kaplan, who got the win — blanked the Lake Monsters over the last seven innings.

Starter Pedro “No Relation” Martinez was a bit off, giving up seven hits and three runs in his 2-2/3 innings, as the Lake Monsters jumped to an early lead.

But after that, it was all Cyclones.

The Brooks got a run in the fourth on a bases-loaded wild pitch — but gave the run back in the bottom of the seventh.

But in the eighth, down 4–1, Jose Jimenez smashed a homer to left that tied the game. Jimenez has only played eight games for the Cyclones, yet has three homers.

The win — the Cyclones’ fourth in a row! — moved the team into second place, only three games back of the suddenly human Staten Island Yankees, who have lost two in a row.
