Plunk party! Clones hit three Ironbirds in poor showing

Hudson Valley Renegades 4
Cyclones 1

July 17 at MCU Park

The first-place Clones fell to the Hudson Valley Renegades — their closest rivals in the McNamara Division of the NY–Penn League — leaving Brooklyn’s beloved ball club just one game ahead in the standings.

The Renegades took an early lead with a solo blast by catcher Luke Maile in the second. The team put up three more runs in the fourth, as Cyclones starter Julian Hilario pitched himself into a jam by giving up a single to shortstop Ryan Dunn, then walking two straight batters. A line drive by first baseman Michael Williams scored one, and a double by third baseman Leonardo Reginatto brought in two more — forcing Cyclones skipper Rich Donnelly to call in reliever Ernesto Yanez from the bullpen.

Renegades hurler Jesse Hahn limited the Clones to no runs and just one hit in four innings on the mound, and sent them down in order three frames in a row. In the bottom of the sixth, Hudson Valley reliever Eduar Quinonez gave up a double to right fielder Eudy Pina and another double to center fielder Brandon Nimmo that brought Pina home, but the Renegades righty held the Cyclones hitless and scoreless for the last three innings of the game.

The Cyclones are home again at MCU Park [1904 Surf Ave. at W. 17th Street in Coney Island, (718) 449–8497, www.brooklyncyclones.com] tonight at 7 pm as they take on the Hudson Valley Renegades.
