Suspicious activities around local shuls raise alarm

Police and residents are on alert in Sheepshead Bay after two men were spotted taking video outside two Ocean Parkway synagogues over the weekend.

Surveillance video shows the two men outside Congregation Bet Yaakob on Ocean Parkway at Aveneue R across the street from the Mirrer Yeshiva, on March 7. One of the men appeared to pose for a photo being taken by the other at the front door of the synagogue before they were confronted by a security guard.

The guard told police the two men drove off in a blue Honda Accord with Delaware plates, according to Yeshiva World News. The same two men were also reportedly spotted doing the same thing outside the Bet Torah Shul a few blocks up Ocean Parkway at Avenue K before driving off in a blue Honda.

Later that day, the 66th Precinct asked locals to be on the lookout for the car, and the NYPD Counter-Terrorism Bureau is investigating, according to the local councilman, who reminded residents of the need to be watchful.

“Unfortunately, in this day and age, our houses of worship and public places of assembly have become targets,” said Councilman Chaim Deutsch (D–Sheepshead Bay). “As always, it is essential for residents to remain vigilant and immediately report anything out of the ordinary to the police.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577–8477. The public can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or by texting tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.
