A Cobble Hill comedian is taking the online dating world to task with a live comedy show all about the popular dating app Tinder. But the creator of “Tinder Live” said she is laughing at herself as much as anyone.
“I walked into the kitchen of my apartment and both of my roommates were on it without realizing the other one was. So I said ‘f— it’ and decided to join too,” said Lane Moore, who will bring her show to the Knitting Factory in Williamsburg on Oct. 16. “There is just so much about Tinder that is funny.”
There is already plenty of mean-spirited mocking of online dating profiles and experiences on the internet, but Moore — who writes for the Onion and McSweeney’s and is a sex and relationships editor for Cosmopolitan.com — said she tries to keep the jokes lighthearted.
“It is not ‘oh, look how sad and ugly these people are’ because that would be mean and lazy,” said Moore. “It is really good natured. If the people we were talking about were in the audience that night, they would have gotten laid after the show.”
Each of Moore’s “Tinder Live” shows has a variety of segments. In one, she goes through Tinder profiles with the audience and they all vote together on whether to accept or deny the person. She also scours the site for hilarious profile pictures, or ones in which you cannot tell who the potential hook-up actually is.
“There was one guy whose only picture was 12 dudes with white eyes,” she said.
And though she picks fun at it, Moore remains a dedicated Tinder user herself — at least for now.
“I am one of the few people on there who actually wants to date and be in a relationship. I do not use it as a hook-up app,” she said. “I am hoping to meet someone cool on there, but so far, it is non-stop monsters.”
