In addition to running in a highly competitive race for City Council in the 33rd District, Brooklyn Heights resident Doug Biviano hosted an art opening in his own campaign headquarters (89 Montague Street, Brooklyn Heights).
“It was great.I’m trying to build connections with an open door process,” said Biviano.“It’s a symbolic message, to open my door to the people, like I am trying to open the democratic process to the people.”
The exhibit “New Americans” by artist Lorena Turner features photographs of newly naturalized American citizens struggling with health care. About 50 people came to the opening. The exhibit will be on display until mid-August. The office will also be hosting a health care forum aimed at helping small businesses and individuals navigate health insurance costs and policy options on August 19 as the next part of their Open Door Series.
Biviano met Turner while petitioning in her Park Slope neighborhood and said he immediately came up with the idea to hold an exhibit in his new office. “What’s really interesting about this is it puts a face on a very contentious policy. This is what’s missing from our leaders and the media. They never put a face on policies that are so important. Lorena did a great job.Everyone should come see it.”
