The Left Coast’s smartest folk rockers, The Decemberists, indulged a sopping wet crowd at Celebrate Brooklyn’s first benefit show of the season on Tuesday night — and, to paraphrase the band itself, the raincoats they wore only made it rain more.
Lead singer Colin Meloy, sporting a frizzled mop and beard that made him resemble a young George Lucas, led his band through a 90-minute set, including rollicking versions of “July, July!,” “We Both Go Down Together,” and “The Chimbley Sweep” in front of a sold-out crowd.
Meloy ordered the rain to disperse — which it did midway through his set — before giving a shout out to his friend, Brooklyn comedian Eugene Mirman, and urging fans to “get married” and raise their children in Park Slope — which cleverly ensures a new generation of Decemberists fans in perpetuity.
