The game of the week

Scrappers 1

Cyclones 2

Friday, July 16 at MCU Park

Undefeated starter Angel Cuan gave up lots of singles, but got outs when he needed them, giving up just one run on eight hits in 6-2/3 innings to get his third win of the year.

Mahoning Valley got on the board first, when Cuan gave up three consecutive singles — two of them bleeders — but then retired the side swiftly.

The Cyclones stormed back in the third, getting all the runs they’d need when newcomer Amauris Valdez doubled and then scored on Luis Nieves’s homer.

Cuan again gave up leadoff singles in the fourth, but closed the door with three straight outs. And he got into trouble in the seventh, before reliever Samual Taveras induced a groundout.

Taveras was one of three Cyclone relievers who combined to no-hit the Scrappers over the last 2-1/3 innings.

True, the Cyclones only managed six hits on the night, but the powerful heart of the order — Darrell Ceciliani, Cory Vaughn and Jeff Flagg — got one each.
