The Kitchen Sink

DUMBO: Our pal, Mikey Weiss, is bringing his popular Williamsburg multimedia supply and computer repair franchise, Mikey’s Hook Up, to 70 Washington St. in September. “[DUMBO] just felt right…everyone was on a mission to get something done, constantly,” Weiss said, hoping to fill a niche in their busy lives. … And our favorite (and only!) neighborhood hot dog man, Sam Elbashy, now has two employees joining him at his Pearl Street falafel and coffee stand. And Gov. Paterson says the economy is in bad shape! … Our pal Eric Bennett is just back from Cooperstown, where he and seven other Brooklynites won the Legends of Baseball classic at historic Doubleday Field. Joining Bennett on the team was, believe it or not, former Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Jerry Dolan, 84 years young and still hurling! … Park Slope: Ran into teen lit queen Libba Bray at the Tea Lounge on Union Street the other day. Bray, looking super foxy as always, said she has started to write her books, including her forthcoming “Going Bovine,” at the newer Tea Lounge now that the one on Seventh Avenue at 10th Street is closed. We’re telling you, the couch where Bray crafted at least four novels should be put in the writer’s Hall of Fame. … Boroughwide: Borough President Markowitz went on a world tour in a 15-minute speech at last week’s Metrotech Business Improvement District and Fulton Mall Improvement Association meeting. First, Marty called the Gowanus Canal, “Brooklyn’s Venetian waterway.” Next, he referenced a recent trip to Istanbul and said our waterfront could be more like the Bosphorus. Finally, he suggested Paris by saying that “Brooklyn is New York’s Left Bank.” Which reminds us: Markowitz will be term-limited out of office in one year, four months and three weeks, but who’s counting? … The IRS, for a change, wants to give you money, but 62,045 Brooklynites haven’t bothered to collect it. Yes, that’s the number of locals who still haven’t filed tax forms this year, and doing so would qualify them for the $300 stimulus check. Go to www.irs.gov by Oct. 15 in file. … Williamsburg: Our favorite hipster healer, Dr. Jay Parkinson, is poised to open a Web-savvy, no-insurance-necessary medical office called Hello Health near the corner of Berry and North Eighth streets. The youthful doc is hoping to treat an equally youthful Northside demographic by making house calls, accepting cash, and communicating with patients via text messages and e-mail. If Parkinson really wants to reach Williamsburg’s uninsured youngsters, he should have an open bar at his office’s July 31 launch party. Hint, hint. … Our friends over at the Brooklyn Bowl — the planned concert venue and music hall — are bringing gourmet grub to their Wythe Avenue Xanadu. The folks behind Park Slope’s Blue Ribbon will run the kitchens at the proposed 16-lane alley at the corner of North 12th Street, owners Peter Shapiro and Charley Ryan revealed last week. … Bay Ridge: Our pal Andrew El-Kadi is collecting signatures to save the soon-to-close Starbucks on Third Avenue between 84th and 85th streets. So far, he has gathered a whopping 42 names. That’ll surely get the attention of the java-loving fiends in Seattle! Perhaps El-Kadi would’ve gotten more signatures if he stalked coffee fans at the other three Starbucks in walking distance to the one that’s slated to close. If you want to help him, though, visit www.starbuckson3rd.info. … Carroll Gardens: Our clean-minded pals at Sacred Hearts –St. Stephens will hold their annual car wash on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 11 am to 3 pm. Bring your dirty, smelly auto to the churchyard (125 Summit St., near Hicks Street). Cars are $12 and vans and SUVs are $18 (man, those big car dealers get it at the pump and at the churchyard!). For info, call John Heyer at (917) 402-9086.
